Activity 3: Reflection

A. Do you think it is more effective to search the invisible web (databases) than using search engines, meta-search or subject directories? Why?

Honestly, i find that using meta-search is a more effective way of getting better results compared to subject directories and invisible webs. . My current standing is meta-search first, invisible web in second place and subject directories being the last. So far, meta-searches have given me better results compared to subject directories and some invisible webs. Meta-search, uses the whole Internet to find related keywords and topics, giving me a wide selection to choose from which is better. But for invisible webs and subject directories, it is more subjective. If the given topic is related or relevant to any of the directories given, then good luck. It is very difficult to find a related topic to a different subject. But when the topic is relevant, wonderful results will be given from the invisible webs and subject directories. Unfortunately, for me my topic is relevant. And this is why i think meta-searches are more effective to search.

B. Name ONE database which you will use for your research topic. Why?

I will use LexisNexis Academic for my research topic. So far it has given me positive results relating to my current topic "Role and relevance of traditional customs and practices in a modern society". The magazines and newpaper articles prove useful in terms of information. And there is a timeline when searching which means i can get old stuff as well as very recent stuff from LexisNexis Academic.

C. Name ONE more database which you will use for your course. How will you use this database for your course?

Choosing one datebase is quite difficult. Since my course is "Moving images, animation", I have to know and understand the suitation currently happening in the world. I need to know how the body works so that my animation is smooth, i need to know what's in and what's not. Frankly speaking, I need a datebase that tells me about the world in one go. I would choose GIC or Global Issues in context. There are different catergories for me to choose from, from the topics. Imagine I have a animation I need to do about poverty or terrorism. I can go to GIC and search for the given topics and learn more about what they do from there. This is why I would choose GIC as a datebase I will use for my course.
